Troubleshooting is one of the important issue in electrical job ,  before working on any electrical circuit always turn the power off ,   then you are able to state to test whole circuit with tester , other tips

  1) double check the device that is not working.

  2) shut down the power circuit that is not working

  3) check out your breakers and fuses. 

  4) check out the switch.
